Thomas Mudge 1715-1794 was one of the most important English watchmakers. He was a trainee by George Graham London. After Graham died in 1751, Thomas Mudge became the successor of the company in Fleet Street. He was one of the most famous watchmakers and inventors in this time. Amongst others, he invented the free lever escapement in 1759. This special escapement was also built into the famous “Queen Charlotte watch” of King George III, which is still part of the Royal collection. He became the Royal watchmaker in 1777.
