Silver pocket chronometer by Robert Roskell

A very heavy English silver open faced pocket chronometer, circa 1845. Spring detent escapement, spring in the manner of Earnshaw, two part bi metallic compensation balance in the manner of Earnshaw with two wedge shaped, rounded sliding brass weights and two large steel regulating screws, steel shafts with eyelets in the manner of Earnshaw to stabilize the balance to the mass weights, finely engraved balance bridge with blued steel chaton and diamond end stone, escape wheel with screwed gold chaton, special blued helical hairspring. Cuvette with inscription. White enamel dial with Roman hours, outer minute divisions, subsidiary seconds and blued steel hands. Plain case, case maker’s punch IBWW.

Robert Roskell, born in Liverpool, circa 1805-1873, was one of the best known English chronometer makers. He made marine deck watches and very fine pocket watch chronometers. There is also a Roskell signed pocket watch chronometer based on Earnshaws Sugar Tong type.
