Fire gilded one handed hour striking coach watch with date by Köberle

An important German fire gilded bronze open faced one handed verge coach watch with hour strike and date, circa 1690. Full plate movement, chain and fusee, two barrels, one hammer, verge escapement, silver regulator disc, iron balance. Silver champlevé enamelled dial with Roman hours interspersed with stars, finely decorated centre with a signature plaque and fruit arrangement, a window for the date at 6 o’clock and a single blued steel hand. The case back with an engraved scene of a farmstead, a pierced case band decorated with engraved flower and foliage scrolls as well as baskets filled with fruits, rear bell.

Wilhelm Köberle was born around 1648 in Wasserburg, Germany, on the shores of Lake Constance and he died in 1720. He married in 1688 in Eichstaedt. Köberle is known to have been a very prolific maker of mainly table clocks and carriage clocks. Today many of his pieces are in the possession of different collections and museums, e.g. the Mathematisch Physikalischer Salon in Dresden or the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
