Pocket chronometer with a golden cylindrical spiral
–
A very fine pocket chronometer, made by Jules Jürgensen, in Copenhagen, Denmark, circa 1838-1840. This chronometer boasts an 18 Carat gold, engine turned, chased, coin edge, open faced case. The well preserved white enamel dial exhibits an outer ring adorned with Roman numerals, offering a classic touch to the overall design. Positioned at the 6 o’clock mark it has a prominent second display with Arabic numerals and blued steel hands adds both functionality and visual appeal. The chronometer movement of this Jules Jürgensen watch is particularly significant as it is equipped with a rocker and a golden, cylindrical spiral.
The housing and dust cover of this pocket chronometer bear the number 2235 and the dust cover itself is signed.

This is possibly the earliest Jürgensen chronometer still in existence. In Knudsen’s  “The Jürgensen Dynasty” the earliest Jürgensen watch mentioned is the 3943 from 1843. A very similar chronometer is shown on page 237. This chronometer also has an unsigned dial with an unusually large second. Knudsen writes that this is not unusual for early Jürgensen watches!
