The company history
1893 parted Dietrich Gruen from the Columbus Watch Co. and opened together with his eldest son Frederick in 1894 in Cincinnati, the company “D. Gruen & Son” . In the same year, the “Grünsche Uhrenfabrikation Grün und Assmann” is founded in Glashütte . The first Assmann -Uhrwerke were 1894 / 95 supplied and started with the serial number 62000. were nickel works in two sizes (19”’ and 20”’) and two versions of each (18 and 21 stones ) with decorative edge, balancing anchor, divided board , rubyMade in screwed gold chatons , Glashütte gold screw compensation balance with Breguet hairspring and eccentric fine adjustment via cam. The escapement with balance anchor was developed by Moritz Grossmann for Gruen. 1898 occurs Georg John Gruen one into his father’s company, which then in D. Gruen & Sons is renamed.

Around 1900, movements from Switzerland were increasingly used, as the machines for clockwork production at Assmann were destroyed in a flood and the Americans were more flexible in responding to the manufacturing requirements of the Americans. For a short time from 1900 Assmann delivered a small pocket watch movement (17 ″ ″) with the typical ¾ plate, decorative cuts, Glashütte gold lever escapement, red gold drive wheels , swan neck fine adjustment and ruby bearings in screwed gold chatons with 21 stones on green. The clocks with Glashütte movements were mostly marked with “D. Gruen & Son (s) ”signed, all other works provided with the“ DG&S ”logo. From 1910 the works were signed with “Green”. In total, fewer than 3,000 movements are said to have been delivered to Gruen. Often the movements and dials were also delivered with sellers’ signatures. The cases were manufactured in the USA for customs and tax reasons
