A very fine and rare American, elegant and lavishly decorated sapphire and diamond-set platinum Art Deco pendant watch with matching brooch, circa 1925. An oval case, the back centred with a diamond- and sapphire-set rosette, small diamond-set pendant with an additional ogival link set with diamonds and sapphires. Matching oval brooch. Silver dial with champlevé radial Arabic numerals, outer minute track, engine-turned centre. Blued steel Breguet hands. Extra Precision, nickel movement, Geneva striping decoration, 18 jewels, stamped with the Seal of Geneva Quality Mark, all adjustments, straight-line lever escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance with Breguet balance spring, platinum dust cap. Dial and movement signed.

At the time this watch was made, Gruen was in partnership with Rolex. The company’s official name was Société Anonyme Fabrique des Montres Rolex & Gruen Guild. Gruen watches of the period were of the same quality as Rolex, sometimes even better. The lavishness of its case and the superior quality of its movement suggest that the present watch was destined for a horological exhibition.
