Gold and enamel dress watch with long chain by Patek Philippe

A very fine, thin Swiss 18 carat gold and enamel open faced keyless lever dress watch with presentation inscription of naval interest and 18 carat gold fancy link long chain, circa 1933. Rhodium plated movement, Geneva striping decoration, stamped twice with the Seal of Geneva Quality Mark, 18 jewels, wolf’s tooth winding, straight-line moustache lever escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance with 8 adjustments, blued steel Breguet balance spring with overcoil, micrometer regulator. Gold hinged cuvette with engraved presentation inscription Au Lieutenant de Vaisseau Derrien Commandant le Sous-Marin ‘Le Glorieux’ 1933. Brushed silver dial with applied gold Breguet numerals, outer dot minute divisions, subsidiary seconds dial and original gold Breguet hands. Polished case, the back cover with blue champlevé enamel monogram E.D. Dial, case, cuvette and movement signed, case numbered. Accompanied by the original fitted box, Certificate of Origin and the Extract from the Archives.

Le Glorieux was a French submarine that took part in World War II combat and was awarded the Medal of Resistance with rosette in recognition of its contribution to the war effort on November 20, 1946.

Edmond Louis Hyacinthe Derrien (1882-1946), Lieutenant de Vaisseau, Derrien was commander of French submarine Le Glorieux in the 1930’s. In 1942, Admiral Derrien was in command of French naval forces in Bizerte, Tunisia, when the Germans invaded.
