Gilt metal and paste set striking centre seconds clockwatch by William Carpenter

A fine and rare English gilt metal and paste set open faced quarter striking two train clockwatch with centre seconds and stop feature made for the Chinese market, circa 1790. Hinged dial plate, gilt-brass full plate movement with tapered cylindrical pillars, two train, going train with fusee and chain, verge escapement, plain steel three armed balance, single footed cock pierced and engraved with foliage, diamond endstone, silver regulation disc, striking the hours and quarters on a bell in the back of the case. White enamel dial with Roman numerals, outer minute track and original gold ovoid hands. Pierced case back and the front engraved with foliate decoration, bezel set with red paste stone border, gilt dust cover. Movement and dust cover signed.

William Carpenter (1770-1805) is best known for his elaborate musical automata, several examples of which are preserved in the Peiping Museum. He made watches and automata for the Oriental market.
