Platinum, diamond and pearl set keyless lever by Ferdinand Verger

An extremely fine, rare and elegant Swiss platinum, diamond and pearl set keyless lever pendant watch with hand painted panels and matching chain, circa 1905. Rhodium-plated movement, Geneva striping decoration, 18 jewels, straight-line lever escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance, blued steel Breguet balance spring, index regulator. The dial is painted en suite to the case and decorated with three cherubs on a blue ground, small hour indication with white painted Arabic numerals and original black Breguet hands. The pentagonal case by Fernand Paillet, both bezels set with rose-cut diamonds, the glazed back cover decorated with a painted scene of a lady with cherubs and flower garlands, the whole mounted within a pearl border suspended from strands, platinum and rose-cut diamond set suspension loop and tassel. Comes with a platinum chain composed of elongated and lozenge shaped links set with round diamonds.

Ferdinand Verger, 1851-1928, was a jeweller, watchmaker and President of the Chambre Syndicale des Bijoutiers. In 1879 he became the French agent for Vacheron & Constantin. In 1896 he registered the trademark ‘FV’. In 1911 the firm moved to 51 Rue Sainte Anne under the name of Verger Frères with the trademark ‘VF’.

Fernand Paillet, 1840-1918, was a pupil of Carrier-Belleuse, known for portraits on enamel and porcelain. He exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1873. From 1879 to 1888 he worked in the Sèvres porcelain factory.
