Gold open faced key winding repeating cylinder watch

A fine Austrian 18 carat yellow gold open faced quarter repeating pocket watch made by August Heckhel in Vienna, mid 18th century. It has a mechanical keywound fire gilded brass movement with a cylinder escapement, a chain driven fusee, and a silver regulator disc with an advance/delay rosette. The quarter repeating mechanism is activated via the pendant and includes a repetition speed adjustment. The balance cock is intricately hand pierced and centred with an old cut diamond endstone. And it is signed August Heckhel In Wienn on the movement plate.

The white enamel dial shows black Roman numerals for the hours, an outer minute track with Arabic fifteen minute numerals, gilt hands, and a key winding aperture. The dial is framed by an engraved surround reading August Heckhel à Wienn. The watch is housed in a round 18 carat yellow gold open faced case with engraved initials on the reverse back cover and the interior caseback hand engraved QUA’ MOI.
