Silver gilt snuff box with watch by Johann Georg Gigel

A museum like, Bohemian silver gilt snuff box with concealed verge watch, Diana and Actaeon, circa 1720-1730. Silver gilt case, top and bottom engraved with representation of the myth of goddess Diana and Actaeon, fine goldsmith’s work, inside gilt, top with two opposite lids, beneath one lid the concealed watch. Magnificently engraved dial, probably gold, a rare version with a mock pendulum and regulation through the dial, blued steel hands, Roman radial hours and outer minutes track with Arabic five minute numerals. Full plate movement in the shape of the box, lower plate signed Johann Georg Gigel Brin, early verge movement with vase pillars.

The Gigel (Giegel -Giegl- Girgl) watchmaking family originally came from the Munich area, where they were recorded as Court Watchmakers from 1680 onwards, but were later recorded in cities in the Czech Republic, including Prague and Plzen and, as can be seen from the signature on the box, probably also in Brno.
