Brass and mahogany Marine chronometer by Breguet

A fine and rare French brass and mahogany eight day Marine chronometer with power reserve, circa 1819. Sold on 27 April 1819 to Ducom, Bordeaux, for 2,700 Francs (3,000 Francs minus a discount of 10. 3/4 Plate gilt brass movement with one going barrel, chain fusée, Earnshaw spring detent escapement mounted on a lenticular platform, two armed bimetallic compensation balance with cylindrical weights and peripheral adjustment screws, freesprung regulator, polished helical hairspring. Silvered dial, small hour dial with Roman numerals, blued steel Breguet hands, large subsidiary seconds, fan shaped power reserve, cylindrical brass bowl with screw bezel, gimballed in two tier mahogany box with brass fittings and handles, sliding observation panel in the lid. Dial signed Breguet Neveu & Comp. and numbered, movement numbered.

A masterpiece from the workshop of the celebrated master watchmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet (1747-1823), ‘Watchmaker of the Kings, King of Watchmakers’. This piece is a testimony of French Marine chronometry at its best, one of Breguet’s rare eight day Marine chronometers with power reserve. As a member of the Board of Longitude in Paris since 1814, Abraham-Louis Breguet contributed significantly to the development of Marine chronometers.
