Jules Jürgensen (1808-1877) was born in Le Locle, the son of the watchmaker Urban Jürgensen (grandson of Jacques-Frédéric Houriet). In Copenhagen, Jürgensen received an apprenticeship in his family’s watchmaking business and also studied mathematics, astronomy and foreign languages. Shortly after the death of his maternal grandfather, he went to Switzerland and opened a watch factory in Le Locle in 1834. Jürgensen attracted worldwide attention with the production of precision watches.
