Gold quarter repeater by Fredrik Jürgensen
–
A Danish gold open faced quarter repeating duplex watch, circa 1820. The watch features a gilded full plate movement, signed Fredrik Jürgensen Kiöbenhavn, with a duplex escapement. The backplate has an aperture revealing the escape wheel, a flat three arm balance with blued steel timing screws, a blued steel hairspring with a bi metallic compensation curb, and a blued steel regulation index. It is equipped with two hammers repeating on coiled gongs. The white enamel dial, also signed by Fredrik Jürgensen, has Arabic numerals, an outer minute ring, blued steel hands, and a large subsidiary seconds display. The gold case boasts an engine turned back and bezel, a milled band, and a pendant locking slide between 1 and 2 o’clock. The gilt metal cuvette is signed and numbered by Fredrik Jürgensen, and the case back is also numbered.

The movement is not running; however, a slight impetus briefly engages it, activating the balance and escapement. There is some tarnishing, oxidation, and light scratches on the plates. The repeating function is clear, although the repeating train itself is somewhat noisy. The hands are setting smoothly. The dial is generally in good condition, with a few light scratches and some surface dirt. The case shows some rubbing on the engine turning at the centre and edges of the case back; otherwise, it is okay. The pendant locking slide is functioning correctly.

Fredrik Jürgensen (1785-1845) was the youngest son of Jürgen Jürgensen (1745-1811) and was born in Copenhagen into a dynasty of fine watchmakers. He apprenticed to his famous older brother Urban Jürgensen (1776-1830) in 1801, with whom he worked until 1809 in Le Locle, Switzerland. In April of that year, he went to Geneva. In 1811, Fredrik was recalled to Copenhagen after his father’s death. On May 15th, 1811, he was appointed watchmaker to the court as the successor of his father. It is reported that Jürgensen made only around 500 pocket watches between 1811 and 1843, typically with a double wheel duplex escapement and a large steel cylinder escapement.
