Gold presentation watch for King Carlos I of Portugal

Fine and rare Swiss 14K gold and enamel hunting cased keyless pocket watch, circa 1900. Made for presentation by King Carlos I of Portugal, decorated with the cypher of King Carlos I. The front cover is decorated with the cypher of King Carlos I in translucent Royal blue champlevé enamel below the Portuguese crown decorated with black and red enamel. Hinged gilt metal cuvette. White enamel dial with Arabic numerals, outer minute divisions, subsidiary seconds and pierced gold scroll hands. A frosted gilt movement, 17 jewels, straight-line lever escapement, cut-bimetallic compensation balance, blued steel Breguet balance spring, and an index regulator. Cuvette signed.

Carlos I, King of Portugal (1863-1908) the son of King Luis and Princess Maria Pia of Savoy, he became king on October 19, 1889. On February 1, 1908, the royal family was the victim of an assassination plot. Shots were fired from the crowd by at least two men. The king died immediately, his heir Luís Filipe was mortally wounded, and Prince Manuel was hit in the arm. Several days later Manuel was acclaimed king of Portugal.
