Gold repoussé verge by Anthony Guiguer
–
An English pair cased verge pocket watch with “repoussé” decoration “The flute playing shepherd”, circa 1700.
The elaborate 22 carat gold outer case is decorated “repoussé” with a finely chased scenery, showing a herdsman playing the flute in a sylvan setting; the scene is framed by a cartouche made of volute garlands and baskets filled with fruits. A dog sleeps peacefully at the man’s feet while a cow stands on his right. The innner case is 14 carat gold with a case maker’s punch mark “PIEI”. The dial is white enamel with Roman numerals for the hours, Arabic for the minutes and decorative hands. It has a full plate movement, signed Guiguer London, a chain/fusee and a three-arm brass balance.
