Gold key-wound pocket watch

An English 9 carat gold hunting cased pocket watch made by Bennett & Co in London, mid 19th century. It has a mechanical movement with key winding and a single footed English cock. The signed white enamel dial features Roman numerals for the hours, a railway minute track, a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock, and spade hands. The round case is hinged, with guilloché decoration on both sides and English warranty hallmarks. The bezel and glass need refastening.

Bennett & Co. usually refers to the famous nineteenth century London watchmaking family, specifically Sir John Bennett. The most famous Bennett & Co. establishment was at 65 Cheapside, London. Records also show a Messrs Bennett & Co. in Greenwich dating back to 1765. Sir John Bennett (1814–1897) was the company’s most prominent figure. He was known as the Watchmaker to the Queen and the Royal Observatory. He was a flamboyant figure who gave many lectures on watchmaking.
