Decorative skeletonized watch for the Chinese market by James Grantham

A decorative, skeletonized English verge pocket watch, glazed on both sides with centre seconds – for the Chinese market, circa 1770.
Copper fire gilt case, glazed on both sides, with florally engraved edges, paste-set bezels and large lateral hinge. Enamel dial with radial Roman hours and “Poker & Beetle” hands. Firegilt movement, skeletonized and finely florally engraved, signed and numbered, with chain/fusee, squared baluster movement pillars, six-arm plain steel balance and very finely engraved pierced balance cock.

James Grantham was based in London, he worked from about 1730 to 1770. A Grantham pocket watch is in the collections of the Fitzwilliam Museum Cambrigde and The Science Museum. (It used to be in “The Clockmakers’s Museum” – The Worshipful Company Of Clockmakers Of London.
