Important  museum like pendant watch without hairspring

An important, museum like early pendant watch with extremely rare calendar and still without hairspring, made by Henry Crumpe in London, England, circa 1670. This watch has an open faced pair case which was crafted from silver, the outer case is lacquered and decorated with nails and the plain inner case has the master’s mark TF. The dial with heart shaped silver cartouches for the hours in Roman numerals and peripheral date display in Arabic numerals and one single hand. The very early and beautiful movement, has a verge escapement, a gut string, very early and rare pierced pillars, a pierced verge wheel, a very early two edged balance without a hairspring, a foliot, and an extremely rare moving calendar on a rotating blued steel ring.

This watch was sold at the ‘Evolution of Forms in Horology’ Auction in Geneva 2002 and realized a price of CHF 27.600.

Only two other comparable pieces were offered at auctions:
1. The astronomical pendant watch from the Sandberg collection, signed Tracy, Rotterdam, auctioned in Geneva in the special auction ‘The Sandberg Watch Collection’). This watch was also equipped with this extraordinary date function and a very similar case.
2. An almost identical watch signed Bird Oxford, dated 1668 from the collection of Dyson Perrins, auctioned at Sotheby’s in 1943.
