Gold enamel pocket watch by Barraud, for the Chinese market
–
An English exquisite large diamond- and pearl set gold enamel pocket watch with center seconds for the Chinese market, circa 1800. The gold enamel case features a wavylined back, a pyramidal engine turned surface, and translucent cobalt blue enamel. At the centre, there’s a large diamond star mounted on silver, with a single prominent diamond, surrounded by a geometric spray of smaller diamonds. The bezels set with half pearls, along with the pendant, are decorated with blue and white enamel stripes. The enamel dial features radial Roman numerals, centre seconds, and gold baton hands. Inside, the fine full plate movement is key wound, gilt, fully engraved with foliate patterns, and signed. It includes a three arm steel balance, a cylinder escapement, and a diamond end stone on the balance, set in a chaton.

Paul Philipp Barraud (1750-1820) was an eminent English chronometer maker in London. In 1796 he became a member of the Clockmakers Company of London and a master in 1810/11. He formed a partnership with George Jamieson and William Howells. Of Barraud’s seven children, his sons Frederick Joseph, John, and James joined the business. From 1796 to 1820 they created more than 1,000 chronometers together.
