Gold repoussé pocket watch by Robert Thorne
–
An English gold pair cased quarter repeating verge pocket watch with repoussé ornamentation, circa 1765.
This watch features a gilded brass full plate movement with chain and fusee, a verge escapement, and a pierced and engraved balance cock. The silver regulation disc adds to its precision and accuracy. The gold champlevé dial boasts Roman radial hours, an outer minutes track with Arabic five minutes numerals, and blued steel beetle & poker hands. The watch with a pierced engraved rim has two gold cases: an outer case with repoussé high relief of extraordinary quality; and a plain polished inner case. The watch is signed on the movement with Thorne’s name and the number 282, while the face bears the signature THORNE. Inside the outer case, a watch paper reveals that the timepiece was serviced by Mayne Watch & Clock Maker, located at No. 111 Union Street, Stonehouse. The paper also advertises the shop’s services for repairing jewellery, as well as selling cheap watches and clocks.
