Gold lady’s watch with ruby cylinder escapement

A very fine French, small and rare, platinum and yellow gold Montre Simple Excentrique, pendant watch with ruby cylinder escapement, circa 1823. Breguet short gold chain and ratchet key. Sold to Baronne de Grantham on June 27, 1823 for 1420 Francs. An engine-turned back and borders and platinum band, gold detachable cuvette. Double-link chain and double-ended ratchet key.

Silver dial, eccentric, champlevé radial Roman numerals on the brushed chapter ring, outer dot minute divisions, engine-turned centre and outer border. Gold Breguet hands.
A gilt brass movement, hanging barrel, ruby cylinder escapement, gold three-arm balance, blued steel flat balance spring, jewelled balance and escape wheel, pare-chute on the top balance wheel pivot, blued steel anchor regulator. Dial and cuvette signed.

Provenance: Thomas Robinson, 3rd Baron Grantham and subsequently 2nd Earl de Grey of Wrest (1781-1859). Lord Grantham a nobleman of great wealth and fine temper, was a collector, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and, towards the end of his life, President of the Society of Architects. In 1803-1804 he spent over £3,000 with Garrard’s.
