Platinum, gold open faced lady’s pendant watch

A very fine French, small and rare, platinum and gold Montre Simple Excentrique, pendant watch with ruby cylinder escapement, circa 1823. Accompanied by a Breguet short gold chain and ratchet key. Sold to Baronne de Grantham on June 27th, 1823 for 1,420 Francs. Engine-turned back and borders and platinum band, gold detachable cuvette. Double-link chain and double-ended ratchet key. Silver dial, eccentric, champlevé radial Roman numerals on the brushed chapter ring, outer dot minute divisions, engine-turned centre and outer border. Gold Breguet hands. A gilt brass movement, hanging barrel, ruby cylinder escapement, gold three-arm balance, blued steel flat balance spring, jewelled balance and escape wheel, pare-chute on the top balance wheel pivot, blued steel anchor regulator. Dial and cuvette signed.

Provenance: Thomas Robinson, 3rd Baron Grantham and subsequently 2nd Earl de Grey of Wrest (1781-1859).

Lord Grantham was a nobleman of great wealth and fine temper, he was a collector, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and, toward the end of his life, President of the Society of Architects. In 1803 he spent over £3,000 with Garrard’s.
