Gold keyless lever half hunter watch by Charles Frodsham

A fine English gold half hunting cased keyless lever minute repeating chronograph watch with register, circa 1895. This watch features a 22”’ frosted gilded Nicole Nielsen ébauche movement, a ratchet tooth lever escapement, a bimetallic compensation balance, a diamond endstone, and steel chronograph work visible on the backplate, signed Chas. Frodsham at 84 Strand & 115 New Bond Street, London, By Appointment to the Queen, AD Fmsz, partly Swiss. The off white Venetian enamel Willis dial, signed Chas Frodsham no. 08442 AD Fmsz, has Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds, and a large sunken subsidiary dial for a 60 minute register. It features an outer ring for minutes/chronograph seconds with Arabic numerals and blued steel spade hands, with the hour hand featuring a double taper.

The heavy 18 carat gold case has polished covers and a front with a glazed aperture surrounded by blue enamel Roman numerals and a minute ring, a recessed repeating slide, a chronograph pusher, and a handset button with an olivette. It includes a thiefproof swivelling bow and a plain polished gold cuvette and is hallmarked as 18 carat gold, with a date letter for London 1895-6. The back and cuvette feature the maker’s mark HMF in a cameo for Harrison Mill Frodsham, along with the case back numbered 08442 and cuvette numbered 42.
