Silver single hand verge watch

A fine English silver pair cased pre balance spring, single hand watch by Jeremie Gregory, at Royall Exchange London, circa 1665. The outer case is shagreen covered (formerly with pin work decoration). Inner case is polished, with split bezel and loose ring pendant. Silver dial with radial Roman numerals, the centre engraved with a scene depicting a shepherd and his sheep in the foreground, a village in the background. Blued steel arrow single hand.

Hinged gilt brass, full plate movement with early divided Egyptian pillars, fusee with gut line, short train, verge escapement, circular steel foliot, worm and wheel set-up with pierced blued steel brackets and silver regulator disc, silver florally pierced and engraved cock secured by a screw.

Jeremie Gregory worked in London, Cornhill. He was a member of the Clockmakers’ Company in 1652, and master in 1665. A maker of repute, a travelling clock by him is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, a silver alarm watch in the Guildhall Museum, and another in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
