An English pocket watch with pull wind mechanism via a coaxial button in the pendant, circa 1837. Duplex movement, crown winding via tension spring, standing barrel, three-arm ring, cut bimetallic compensation balance.
This watch has an 18 Carat gold engine-turned case with a lion in the middle and the words Vinctus Invictus,
White enamel dial with Roman numerals, outer minutes, blued steel Breguet hands, subsidiary seconds at 3 o’clock. Duplex movement, crown winding via tension spring, a standing barrel, a cylinder escapement and a three-arm ring balance.

Charles Edward Viner (1788-1875) apprenticed with Thomas Savage in London. He became a member of the Clockmakers Company in 1813 and was known for his top quality pocket watches, which he usually fitted with a pump winding mechanism he had invented.
The London- born Viner was born in Bath, Somerset, England in 1788 . From September 22, 1802 he completed an apprenticeship with Thomas Savage (3) in London . On May 3, 1813 , he became a member of the Clockmakers Company . He was initially based in Sweetings Alley, Cornhill, then moved to 233 Regent Street in London and worked there between 1826 and 1835 . Then he was until 1855 located at 235 Regent Street, Royal Exchange. He also had real estate in Old Bond Street between 1844 and 1857, Sackville Street 1856-1867 and New Bond Street 1868-1869.
He manufactured pocket and marine chronometers with Parkinson & Frodsham movements as well as pocket watches with duplex escapement, the latter also with a pump winding . He became Hoskins’ business partner for many years in 1824 . Mann traded under the names Viner & Hoskins and Viner & Co. According to Herbert Blockley , he was the successor to Viner.
Charles Edward Viner was married to Harriet Clark, he died in Lewisham, Kent, England in June 1875.
