An English precision pocket watch with English lever escapement, circa 1871.
18 Carat gold case with engraved monogram, engraved raptor and motto Altiora Peto (I seek higher things), gold dome, and case maker’s punch mark JW (Joseph Walton). Signed and numbered enamel dial with radial Roman hours, auxiliary seconds, and blued spade hands. Gilt 3/4 plate movement, keywind and signed, with chain/fusee, gold screw compensation balance and free-sprung blued balance spring.

Paul Philip Barraud Barraud was famous for his chronometers; he was a Fellow of the Clockmakers Company (1796-1813) and a Master (1810/1811). In 1838 he started a partnership with John Richard Lund, who took over the company after Barraud’s death.
