Gold open faced heavy deck watch by S. Smith & Son

An important, heavy deck watch with a 52.5-minute carousel and Kew certificate class A 83-9 marks especially good, circa 1901. The watch has a silver polished case with a punch mark of the case maker SS. The enamel dial is off-white and features radial Roman numerals, auxiliary seconds, and blued spade hands. The movement is a 3/4 plate with ébauche by Bahne Bonniksen, which is frosted, gilt, chatoned, and has a Bonniksen carousel revolving in 52.5 minutes. The barrel is engraved with Greenwich Time, and it has an English lever escapement, gold screw compensation balance, blued Breguet balance spring with a terminal curve, and chatoned diamond endstone on balance.

This watch comes from a small series of precision watches that S. Smith & Son made at the beginning of the 20th century, most of which were submitted to the KewObservatory trials. The present watch is the largest size and would be classed as a deck watch. Bonniksen supplied the movement and then finished and adjusted it by S. Smith & Son before entry into the Observatory trials. This watch achieved 83.9 marks, and the commendation was Especially good.
