Silver verge in pair cases
–
An amusing English silver pair-cased verge pocket watch, circa 1770, Gilded full-plate movement, verge escapement, decoratively pierced balance cock engraved with floral scrolls and a bird, flat three-arm balance, fusee and chain, baluster pillars, signed Tho. Warren London.
White enamel dial with Roman hours, outer minute divisions, a broad border with polychrome enamel painted scene of a gentleman and a lady in a classical landscape and a fisherman beside a lake below, blued steel beetle & poker hands.
Plain inner case, the back with a winding aperture, stirrup pendant and bow, the outer case is plain too, both cases with maker’s mark HB in a rectangular cameo probably for Henry Billingshurst.

This watch has a painted enamel dial which at first glance appears similar to others within this genre. However, closer inspection shows a number of amusing anomalies: the gentleman rather than the lady holds the shepherd’s crook and the sheep are at his feet rather than hers. What at first sight appears to be two figures in the boat are in fact dogs, one rowing. Looking closer still, the fisherman’s hat seems to be a bird watching the line in the water.
