Pair cased pocket watch by probably Thomas Tompion
–
A rare English silver pair cased verge pocket watch with wandering hour, circa 1700, in the style of the 16th–early 17th century.
This stunning timepiece features a full plate movement, verge escapement, and a beautifully engraved balance cock with a broad pierced cock foot. The semi-circular silver and gilt metal dial boasts a wandering hour aperture, foliate decoration, and an outer Arabic minute arc. Below the painted portrait bust is a pierced gilt panel decorated with trophies of war, while the quarter hours are marked above the portrait. The silver outer case has a square hinge, and the back is centred with an engraved coat of arms, while the plain silver inner case completes the elegant design. The movement is signed by Thos. Tompion of London (Dubious).
