Brass gilt single-handed pocket watch by Jeremie Gregory

A fine, English, single-handed pair-cased verge pocket watch with date indication, circa 1650.
Two cases: outer case – brass, gilt and leather-covered, with gold stud decoration and large lateral hinge; inner case – brass, gilt and polished, with a seven-piece hinge. Brass dial with radial Roman numerals for the hours; pierced and engraved centre ornamented with blossom scrolls; outer date ring with Arabic numerals and single iron hand. Full plate movement, keywind, fire gilt and signed, gut/fusee, Egyptian movement pillars, ratchet wheel set up with blued steel spring, two-arm iron balance without balance spring, and florally engraved and pierced balance cock.

Jeremie Gregory (d. 1686)
He worked in London, Cornhill/Royal Exchange. He was a member of the Clockmakers’ Company in 1652 and a master in 1665. A maker of repute, a travelling clock by him is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, a silver alarm watch in the Guildhall Museum, and another in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
