Brass pair cased pocket watch by Simon Decharmes
–
An early English pair cased brass verge pocket watch with a tortoiseshell design, circa 1700. This watch features a brass pair case with an outer case covered in tortoiseshell and bearing the master’s mark JD and a brass polished plain inner case. The English signed verge movement showcases beautiful movement decoration and early tulip pillars. The watch also has an enamel dial with Roman radial hours, an outer minutes track with Arabic five-minute numerals, and probably original poker and beetle hands.

Simon de Charmes was born in Langres France in 1665. He was the son of Edme de Charmes and Anne Perrenet, who died shortly after his birth. However, as a Huguenot, he remained in France until the Edict of Nantes was revoked in 1685. He escaped to England shortly after 1685 and was resident in London from 1688. From 1691 to 1730, he was a member of the Clockmakers’ Company. In 1691, he was freed from the Clockmakers’ Company.
–
The watch is visually in very beautiful condition, but the movement starts ticking and needs an overhaul.
