Gold open faced pocket watch by Daniel De Saint Leu

A very fine pair-cased English pocket watch with quarter-hour self-strike for the Ottoman market, circa 1800. The outer case is adorned with military equipment, half moons, and a Turkish tenth in the centre, while the inner case is richly engraved and pierced with floral designs. The movement is protected by a signed cap and rear bell, and the enamel dial features Ottoman numerals and gold spade hands. The full plate movement is key-wound and fire gilt, with applied floral decorations and solid movement pillars. It also includes a chain/fusee, two hammers, and two barrels. The cylinder escapement and three-arm brass balance are florally engraved, with a pierced balance cock.

Daniel de Saint-Leu (active 1753-1797) Of Genevan origin. He worked in Geneva and London as a watchmaker to the Queen in 1765; Saint-Leu was renowned for fine enamelled and varicoloured gold clock watches set with diamonds and precious stones and repeating watches for the Turkish and Islamic markets. He also made a magnificent silver-mounted clock for the Court of Spain. Although de Saint-Leu himself was only active until about 1797, the company continued to make watches under his name for roughly another 15 years.
