This watch was gifted to Captain and Adjutant Arthur Jefferies Collins, born on September 30, 1893. He served with the Royal North Devon Hussars in England. The dedication was made in 1918, during which the Royal North Devon Hussars participated in the invasion of Palestine. During this invasion, they were involved in the Second and Third Battles of Gaza, the capture and defence of Jerusalem, and the Battle of Tell ‘Asur.

In August 1831, John Hall teamed up with William Hatfield, a watchmaker from Sheffield who had his shop at 56 King Street in Manchester. They worked together until 1845, but their business continued until 1918. In addition to making clocks, they also imported French clocks and bronzes. At the 1887 Royal Exhibition in Old Trafford, Manchester, they showcased a Jubilee Clock, which reportedly took six years to make and cost £500. This information is sourced from “Manchester Clocks & Clockmakers” by Edmund Davies Greater, Mayfield Books 2007.
