A fine English 18 carat gold open faced lever watch with power reserve and reverse keyless winding, circa 1885. Three-quarter plate keyless movement optionally key winding or crown winding, English lever escapement, four screwed chatons and three gold wheels, large gold screw cut bimetallic compensation balance with diamond endstone, freesprung blued balance spring, screwed in jewelling. White enamel dial with Roman numerals and outer minutes, subsidiary dials for seconds and up and down indicator, blue steel hands. Plain case, gold cuvette with apertures for wind and set. case maker’s punch mark JE.

Karl Zimmerman, Liverpool, born in Germany, was a highly regarded chronometer maker and supplier to Victor Kullberg. He was known for manufacturing high-grade open face pocket watches with up/down dials and was active from about 1845 to 1885. Zimmerman submitted several chronometers for examination at the Yale College Observatory in 1884.
