The carrousel complication was introduced as an alternative to the tourbillon, invented by Abraham Louis Breguet in 1795. First utilized by Dane Bahne Bonniksen in 1892, the carrousel, in a similar manner to the tourbillon, rotates to counteract the effects of gravity on the accuracy of the watch. Bonniksen intended for the carrousel, which is essentially the escapement mounted on a rotating platform, to be a more durable alternative to the tourbillon.
