Gold watch with sharkskin protective case
–
A very fine and rare English, pair cased, 22k gold and enamel and diamond-set pocket watch with the original gilt brass and sharkskin protective case, circa 1794. Remembrance by James Green, the case is made by Sarah Carpenter, London hallmarks for 1794-1795. The outer case is with translucent royal blue enamel over a guilloché ground with applied diamond set silver word Remembrance blue and white enamelled bezels.
–
The inner case is polished, protective gilt brass bezels, band and hinge, sharkskin with gold piqué decoration. White enamel dial with radial Arabic numerals and outer minute divisions. Gold skeletonized Cathedral hands. A hinged gilt brass full-plate movement, fusee with chain, verge escapement, plain steel three-arm balance, flat balance spring, gilt brass pierced and engraved single footed cock. Movement signed, the case with Sarah Carpenter’s master mark. Property of an English Gentleman.

The present watch is unusual in that it still retains its original outer protective case. It is likely that many of the enamel watches of this period would have originally been sold with a case of this type due to their value at the time, however, the vast majority have long since disappeared. This is most likely because the owners of such horological jewels wanted to show the full extent of the enamelling and thus the importance of the piece.

James Green was a prominent London maker, he was appointed by the Act of 1761 to judge Harrison’s timekeeper and was master of the Clockmakers Company from 1784-1804.
