Silver watch with compass and sundial

A France single hand oval pre balance spring watch in silver and gilt brass with engraving depicting The Earls of Kintore , compass and sundial, belonging to the Earls of Kintore family, circa 1625. Full plate fire gilt movement with key winding, pierced and engraved cock, pre balance spring, four vase shaped pillars between the two plates, fusee (Missing the gut), signed S. Gribelin, Bloys (Blois) with a flower (Missing the adjustment wheel).

Gilt dial with single hand in blued steel engraved with a ring of Roman numerals engraved, a scene in the centre depicting The Flood with the word Jehovah written in Hebrew above, flanked by emblematic figures of Life and Death and with memento mori symbols below, also bears the words P SAL and C III on either side of the dial, task pins at every hour.
Oval case with engraved silver band and vignettes depicting all the evangelists, the stylised pendant with suspension loop.
Silver front cover engraved on the outside with a central scene depicting Adam and Eve with the serpent and with four other scenes from Genesis, the case band decorated with cartouche-patterned chases, the silver back cover engraved on the outside with a central scene depicting the Resurrection and with four other scenes from the New Testament, the inside is engraved for a compass and sundial.

This watch appeared at auction for the first time on January 22, 2009 at Christie’s in London, sold by the descendant of the Earls of Kintore, the 14th of the name in the family, it has since remained in a private collection.
