French early and remarkable verge watch
–
A remarkable, early and rare oval pre-balance spring pendant watch with one hand, circa 1590.
A brass/gilt case, glazed/gilt dial, engraved with motifs of birds, lilies and sunflowers. Silver chapter ring, applied hour knobs for time reading by night, engraved centre with a contemporary view of a town, presumably Bordeaux, with the Tour Pey Berland and the Cathedral of Saint Andrew of Bordeaux.
Fire gilt brass full plate movement, gut/fusee, verge escapement, plain two-arm iron balance without balance spring.
The watch is fitted with a rare and unusual rectangular balance cock; this type was also used in another pendant watch by Gribelin à Blois, dating from 1588. Unfortunately, there are no references to a watchmaker F. Sudre; Tarday lists a Ramond Sudre of Bordeaux in 1567.
