Gold ruby cylinder pocket watch by Breguet
–
A fine French gold hunting cased ruby cylinder Montre Simple watch, circa 1839. Sold to Monsieur Pierre Lalanne de Bayonne on 17 September 1840 for 1,500 francs. The watch features an 18 1/2′” gilded movement, signed and numbered Breguet 206, with a ruby cylinder escapement, a three arm gilt balance, parachute suspension, and a compensation curb. It has a guilloché dial, signed Breguet, with a satin finished chapter ring displaying Roman numerals, an outer minute track, and a secret Breguet signature on either side of the 12 o’clock position, also numbered 206. The watch is equipped with blued steel Breguet hands and a satin finished banner above the 6 o’clock position.

The case is crafted from 18 carat gold with engine turned detailing by Tavernier. The gold cuvette is secured by a single blued steel screw and is signed and numbered Breguet 206. Both the front and back of the case are numbered B 206 and S 119. The case maker’s mark, LS, is positioned between a triangle and star within a lozenge-shaped cartouche, along with the Paris control mark for the years 1819-1838. Accompanied by a Breguet certificate dated January 27, 2020.

The movement is running smoothly. The dial shows minor scuffs, scratches, and some tarnishing towards the centre. The case has small scratches and abrasions, with the engine turning slightly worn at the edges, resulting in some loss of definition.

During the 1991 Art of Breguet auction, it was revealed that this watch was initially sold to Monsieur Rigaud on January 15, 1839, for 1000 Francs. However, it seems the watch was quickly reacquired, as Breguet sold it again to Monsieur Pierre Lalanne de Bayonne on September 17 of the following year. Later, it was once more reacquired and sold by Breguet to Henri Moser & Cie., who were Breguet’s agents in Moscow at that time.
Signed: Breguet
