A rare French 18K gold and porcelain verge pocket watch with a polychrome rococo painting in the style of Jean-Antoine Watteau, circa 1783.
The porcelain case back with a polychrome painted scene, decorated rim, Parisian 18K gold punch, peripheral signed probably from Dresden. Signed original white enamel dial with Roman numerals and probably original gold hands, small chips near the winding stem. Signed and numbered verge movement.

Gold verge watches with porcelain paintings are real rarities of the 18th century. They are much rarer than enamel pocket watches and were priceless treasures at that time. The porcelain painting was frequently produced in Saxony, although the plaques were mostly intended for French watches.

Jean Antoine Watteau, better known as Antoine Watteau, was born in Valencijn on October 10, 1684, and died in Nogent-sur-Marne on July 18, 1721. He was a French painter of the rococo period. Watteau’s place of birth was conquered by the French in 1678.
