Gold open faced precision watch

A solid German hunting cased splendour pocket watch made by Julius Assmann in Glashütte, circa 1887. ¾ Plate Glashütte precision movement with a Swiss lever escapement, gold bimetallic screw compensation balance and fine adjustment. White enamel dial with Roman hour numerals, an outer minute track, sunk subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock and blued steel spade hands. This magnificent watch has a Renaissance style case made of 18 carat gold decorated according to Professor Graff. Both sides feature an oval with an upright lion surrounded by volutes and leaf tendrils, flanked by oak leaves and the front with a vacant cartouche. The edges, band, pendant and bow have geometric decoration.

Among the many different Glashütte case shapes, Professor Graff’s cases were the most elaborate and expensive.

 

Professor Carl Ludwig Theodor Graff (1844-1906) was a privy councillor, and senior professor and director at the Royal School of Arts and Crafts in Dresden in 1875. His designs were inspired by Renaissance architecture.
