Pendant watch with a single hand and unusually flat movement
–
A German octagonal, pendant watch with a single hand and unusually flat movement, circa 1650
The firegilt octagonal silver case is fitted with two hinged lids. Both cases are engraved with biblical scenes: On the front, the “Adoration of the Shepherds” from the New Testament, on the back, the “Ascension of Elija and Succession of Elisha” from the Old Testament. A frame of eight bezels surrounds each case; the segments are decorated with flower tendrils, petals and two cherub heads. The octagonal silver firegilt dial is also delicately engraved with flower tendrils and two putti in the upper part and a cherub head below. A view of a medieval town is shown in the centre of the silver chapter ring with Roman numerals – a fine pendant watch with a unique patina.
It has an octagonal brass full plate movement, a gut/fusee, a verge escapement and a wheel balance.
