Johannes Dürrstein 1845-1901 was a German entrepreneur and founder of the watch factory “Union” in Glashütte.
Dürrstein grew up in middle-class conditions and graduated with a commercial apprenticeship at the Frankfurter Uhren-Großhändler Ludwig und Fries. In business, he traveled extensively to Switzerland and became acquainted with the country’s leading watchmakers.
On January 19, 1874, Dürrstein founded the watchmaker Dürrstein und Co. in Dresden and established a trading network in Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bohemia and Switzerland. After some time, Dürrstein sold up to 50,000 pocket watches a year from suppliers from Switzerland.
In 1874, Dürrstein already signed a contract with Ferdinand Adolph Lange in Glashütte for the exclusive sale of Lange watches. The precision watches sold but not to the desired extent, because of the quality also the prices were high. Dürrstein reached the company A. Lange und Söhne that they produced a simpler and cheaper version of the pocket watches, the so-called DUF quality, which sold well as a result. After 1880 Dürrstein introduced the brand Union, which he had produced in Switzerland. Trademark of these Union pocket watches was a bell with 5 stars on case and clockwork, the dials were unsigned. In 1885 his brother Friedrich Dürrstein became a shareholder of the company.
In excellent condition.
