Attractive gold pocket watch of very fine quality
–
An attractive numbered precision pocket watch of very fine quality, made by Julius Assmann in Glashütte, Germany, circa 1905. The plain numbered open faced case is crafted from 14 Carat gold and is a special and rare case because of its very massive quality, à goutte (water drop) shape and an Assmann punch. The gilt engine-turned dial has an outer ring for minutes and hours with black Arabic numerals for the hours, a subsidiary second dial at six o’clock and solid Breguet gold hands. The rare quality movement is numbered, has screwed gold chatons, a moustache lever escapement and a fine-adjusting device.

Julius Assmann
Julius Assmann was born in 1827 and died in 1886 at the age of 58. He was a passionate watchmaker in Glashütte, Germany. Assmann at one time was employed by his father-in-law, Ferdinand Adolph Lange, the man who laid the cornerstone of the German watchmaking industry in the 1840’s. He founded his own company in 1852, the Julius Assmann Deutsche Präzisions Taschenuhren Fabrik (German Precision Pocket Watch Factory) producing key wound pocket watches. Assmann was soon awarded the gold medal by the German Trade Industry. Within two years, his watches progressed to crown winding and the three quarter plates so characteristic of Glashütte. When he died his company was divided among the Assmann family.
