Silver pair cased verge watch

A very fine and rare Italian, gilt brass, silver and painted on enamel, pair-cased, single-hand oignon watch with alarm, circa 1700. Outer case is overlaid with chased and engraved silver, the back with a painted on enamel portrait of the Emperor Joseph (1674-1711) surrounded by an applied silver plaque decorated with two figures and the Habsburg crown above. Framing them, a silver-overlaid band with four vignettes representing battle scenes, the bezel decorated with foliage and flowers, square hinge.

The band of the inner case is pierced and engraved with flowers and foliage, polished back, short, round pendant. Silver dial, champlevé with Roman chapters, diamond half-hour markers, concentric silver revolving alarm disc with Arabic numerals, with blued steel fleur-de-lys pointer indicating the time. Blued steel alarm hand. Hinged gilt brass full plate movement with turned vase pillars, two-train, fusee and chain, verge escapement, plain steel three-arm balance, double-footed cock, pierced and engraved with asymmetrical foliage, regulator pointer protruding from beneath a semi-circular blued steel guard below the bridge, wheel and click set-up. Pierced and engraved fixed barrel for the alarm driving four-wheel steel train, striking on a bell.
