Gold open faced keyless pocket watch by Thomas Engel

A very fine and rare German 18K yellow gold, keyless, “Chronomètre” Type Concours Observatoire pocket watch watch with days of the week, 30-hour power reserve and thermometer, circa 1980. Movement with Geneva stripes, stamped with Thomas Engel punch mark, 19 jewels, straight-line lever escapement, monometallic balance, self-compensating balancespring with outer terminal curve, balance and escape wheel pivots with shock absorbers, micrometer regulator.
Case with screwed-down back cover decorated with engine-turning, polished band and bezel, gold glazed cuvette, balltype swiveling pendant acting as the winding crown.
Silver dial with radial Roman numerals on brushed chapter ring, outer minute dot divisions, engine-turned and whitened center, subsidiary seconds, thermometer sector at 9 o’clock, days of the week between 2 and 3 o’clock aperture for power reserve indication. Gold Breguet hands. Dial and movement signed.

Professor Thomas Engel is internationally known in the field of researching polymers and has received numerous honours and prizes. In 1972, Professor Engel was jointly awarded the ‘Diesel Prize’ with Dr. Wernher von Braun, who is one of the most important rocket developers. Other than his achievements in science, Engel is also a famous watch collector who ‘self-made’ technically outstanding timepieces that often incorporates the style of Breguet, known as Engel Breguets. Professor Engel is also the author of the book A.L. Breguet, Watchmaker to Kings, which detailed the life and exquisite timepieces made by Abraham Louis Breguet.
Accompanied by the original mahogany fitted box with extra main spring, spare pair of hands and original certificate.
