Silver duplex captain’s watch with compass
–
A large English silver hunting cased duplex pocket watch with dual time dials and a compass, circa 1840. Gilt ¾ plate key wind movement with going barrel, the plate decoratively cut away to show the train, an engraved, shaped cock with polished steel regulator, uncut bimetallic balance with a spiral hairspring, crab tooth duplex escapement and the steel escape wheel with two locking teeth so that the watch will appear to beat seconds, screwed in jewelling.

A fully restored signed white enamel dial with subsidiaries for two time zones, the left with Roman numerals and the right with Arabic numerals, a small glazed compass marked with the cardinal points below, seconds beating center seconds and blue steel hands. Engine turned and engraved case, the front cover with a vacant rectangle cartouche, maker’s mark AJ in an oval, a lateral stop slide in the engraved band. Wound and set through the silvered metal cuvette engraved with the retailer’s name and Duplex – Ten jewels & ruby roller.
