A rare and very fine American enameled gold pocket watch by M.S. Smith & Co, Detroit, circa 1870-1874. Attributed to Charles L. Hoyt. 15 Jewel movement, damascened nickel shaped ¾ plate, counterpoised straight line lever escapement, steel escape wheel, gold train, bimetallic balance, blued overcoiled spring, regulator with gold index on back plate, stem wound, button set. White enamel dial, Roman chapters, subsidiary seconds and blued hands. 18 Carat engine turned full hunter case with elaborate enamel monogram, signed ‘M.S. Smith’.
