A very fine and very rare English 18 carat gold, enamel, diamond- and split-pearl-set open faced eight-day duplex pocket watch made for the Chinese market, circa 1800. Highly engraved movement, duplex escapement, large barrel for winding. Cuvette engraved with the illustration of a horse pulling a rope, indicating the direction of the wind and a pair of watch hands beside the offset hand-set square. White enamel dial with the eccentric indication of time and subsidiary seconds, Roman hours, outer minute divisions, and Arabic seconds. Oval case, the case back centred with diamonds, framed by rows of pearls, gold wire-work with outer blue and red enamel, all framed with large split-pearls, the pendant enhanced by split-pearls, pusher to open the hinge back. Dial signed, cuvette and case signed and numbered. Comes with the original key and presentation box.

William Anthony was born around 1765. He worked as a watchmaker in Red Lion Street, Saint John’s Square, Clerken well, where he made exceptional watches for the Chinese market. His watches, usually with oval dials and elaborately set with diamonds, pearls and enamel. He is known to have delivered a small number of watches to the Chinese Court in Peking. Some of his watches were made in pairs.
